Assignment 4

I enjoyed dead like ants the most because they gave me a decent back story which gave me a reason to play. It was least interesting for me to fallow the walkthrough which led me to my death. I thought the most interesting part of the this game was me kissing the widow , it was kind of weird.

For a change was lacking in the “why am I here backstory” or “what’s the point” so i really didn’t feel like playing it all the way I thought this was funny.

> hit the guide book with a rock

You restrain from such an action.

“A tree moving in the wind” and a drawing of a tree moving in the wind.”

the difference between the sentences is the mental picture it creates. interactive fiction is mostly based on words so how the sentence is written creates the mood and will make or break a game. words don’t mean as much in conventional video games.

For A Change and Dead like ants fallow the same format and the overall look. Today I die in my mind completely different than the previous games I mentioned.

Assignment 5

Fallout 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. The intro to the game plays like a interactive montage of events, until there is panic and chaos. This game starts from you in your mommies tummy. A t.v. screen shows your parents what your going to look like when you grow older. As soon as your born your mommy dies and everything goes blank. You jump to when your an infant and talk to your daddy. You live in a vault sheltered by the cruel world outside which you now nothing about. After that, you instantly jump to your  10th birthday, the age of becoming an adult. You receive the coolest piece of technology ever, a pip-boy 3000. (So far this is an embedded narrative the only emergent narrative in the birthday sequence is that butch is a complete douche and will remain a douche, up until you save his mom from rad roaches. If you don’t he will continue to be a douche towards you, which might lead up to his death depending on how pissed of you are of all his douchebaggery.)you continue to leap around to being a teenager to waking up to being a more confused teenager with a run away dad and almost every one in the vault wanting to kill you.

The rest of the game is one big choose your own adventure game. So many types choices such as life choices, dialogue choices, appearance choices, V.A.T choices, perk choices, etc. In the simplest summery of the main quest is you have to restore the water purifier and that is the emergent narrative.

The title, music, dialogue, plot and visuals tie together so nicely. Everything about this game meshes together in complete awesomeness.

Assignment 3

Game: “Today I Die”

Read strikethroughs or read the words after it, Your choice!

best read on my blog site

My initial impression was WTF golly, how do I play this game! Having no idea how to play this game I was confused, hungry, and about ready to turn green and punch a cat read a book. I don’t play word based games so that experience was a new one. I quickly read the guide and It made total sense to me and felt only slightly retarded dumb. but it wasn’t my fault, your suspose to feel “slightly” retarded dumb or full blown retarded dumb on the first or the twentieth try.

Compared to all the other text based games i’ve played which is a grand total of none twenty, I would have to say that this game has many generic elements or retro bit gaming. this game actually lets you move around a character, unlike many other text based games where can’t move around your character. This game is half text puzzle and half generic character puzzle, which creates a totally new experience.

After reading Elrod’s page I saw a green quote either from a different game designer or him which summed up everything about this game. ” Don’t read it like a game, play it like a poem”. With that intellectual truth nugget there is nothing more to say about this game.

(But I should right more because I’m a good little monkey)

Basically the other game designers feel the game needs to be more goal oriented and fail more and Elrod was all like no…. The End

Assignment 2

A little late but finished.

As of right now our game only supports 2 players. I feel having a 2 play game is enough for game setup. With more players gameplay would be to crowded. I guess an alternate  player structure could be 4 on 4, with teams of 2 obviously. Switching off and on with team members during brain challenges sounds kinda fun. If your stuck  on a brain challenge you can allow your teammate to answer a certain amount challenges, depending on items collected.

I would have to say our game is a strategy death brawl with mental checkpoints. As I said before teams could be intergraded if done the right way, but i have my doubts. the current game is a back and forward slugfest physically and mentally. That part of the game structure is a pro. The obvious cons of the current game is unforeseen problems that have not occurred yet and the obvious flaws. To vain I will say our game is pretty solid. With a little tweaks that have been fixed since I started this particular blog assignment.

Assignment 1

Game Definition:

I totally agree with Clark C. Abt in saying “A game is an activity involving player decisions, seeking objectives within a “limiting context” [i.e. rules].” when I think of rules I think of board games, while limiting context to me refers to the limitations presented in the game such as boundaries. I also agree with Greg Costikyan definition.

I mostly agree with David Parlett’s  definition but what i don’t agree is the end factor of a game, because some games don’t have a definitive end such as Fallout 3, Pokemon, etc. The story side of these have an end but the player can still play with out an end.

Similarities:

Between both definitions I have found only one similarity and that is that games have to have a set of rules or limiting context.

fuzzy categories:

I don’t think games are stories, but rather stories being games. Your interactively “playing” a story, with emphasis on “playing” (Assassin Creed 1 and 2 come to mind). In Assassins Creed you are playing the main character in Ubisoft’s epic story of  the history of assassins and templars in modern and ancient times. I don’t have that play ability in a Harry Potter book. Harry’s story is linear and non change able where as Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2  its more open world and though the underlining story is set in stone you will never play the exact way such as moving or fighting the same way each time.
